Photos and audio TBA. ***MEGA - First county record, and very rare, though almost annual in recent years, in the state. Maybe a tad early from the usual May-July period of when they're often discovered. First noted a vireo feeding in a ficus tree at these coordinates: 27.309422,-82.569173 Brief looks brought Philadelphia Vireo to mind until I looked at the face and bill. Immediate adrenaline rush!! Bird took off and my heart sank, but I relocated the bird foraging in a nearby Gumbo Limbo with a REVI before moving off to the treeline next the the kayak launch. It foraged in a carrotwood tree, squabbling with the REVI until it disappeared. I then heard it singing a bit North of there for about 10 minutes before it went silent. I was unable to relocate the bird again. I find it hard to imagine this bird arrived with the East winds, just going off of what I know of their range. Perhaps this bird has been at this site since the strong West winds we had pushing nearly a week ago?!
