Townsend's Storm-Petrel, Crespi Knoll, CA - 5 Aug 2022
Detalles de la observación
White-rumped individual. Flew up the starboard side and across the bow. Not visible for long, but the large white rump with a faint dark streak in the middle was eye-catching. Spotted this bird naked eye at 50-100 yards due to the bright white rump. Direct bounding transiting flight was typical of Townsend's and different than more erratic Leach's Storm-Petrel. Other points favoring Townsend's include dark sooty plumage with pale buffy carpal bars extending out to the leading edge of the wing, short tail offset by the large white rump, and bluntly pointed wings. Overall, this bird was smaller, shorter tailed, and shorter winged than expected for Leach's.
