Hiking a trail and a mother Ruffed Grouse came charging out of the trail edge. Chicks were cheeping, and I saw at least two (they looked like they had primaries, but still had down on their body feathers). The adult had her ruff all the way out and her tail fanned. After the initial charge, she was much slower and deliberate in her approach to us. She hissed most of the time, and also a soft clucking sound I hadn't heard in grouse before. After about a minute or so, we left her alone and carried up the trail. She "escorted" us about 15 or 20 meters up the trail before heading back into the forest (although on the opposite side from the chicks that we had seen).
Detalles de la observación
Came out and attacked, at least two chicks but probably more.
