I add this audio because it is of interest - see checklist note for the species for more info.
Detalles de la observación
I have uploaded audio because I have found this call of interest: the same call was heard on both my prior visits (30 April after 2pm and yesterday, 18 May after 6:40am) from exactly the same spot. On the prior visits a single bird was giving the call from the very dense shrubbery and trees below tall eucalypts beside the grandstand of the abandoned stadium above the wetland. The location is very localised - surrounded by considerable grassy areas in all directions. However it was unusual to have just one (and today two) birds making this call - without any other call that would readily be identified as Common Starling - while anything up to about 15 other Starlings were perched very high in the eucalypts making no calls. Additionally, today I heard the call while I was still approaching the grandstand, from easily 50 metres away. The ID is made today on the basis of this louder call - there is a high pitched metallic squeaky/scraping sound - this is a property I have heard in the background of an extensive song given by a Common Starling in Tasmania (with audio uploaded against checklist https://ebird.org/checklist/S55147063 ). The calls here at Landing Lights have been extremely localised and although the birds appeared to come nearer when I played back recordings of this call, they simply would not show themselves - remaining secreted in the shrubs. I wonder whether this might be part of a courtship ritual with two birds setting up nest.
