Detalles de la observación
Found along willow-lined creek just beyond the east end of the boardwalk at the Southwest Research Station. Small, very dark brown, stub-tailed wren with heavily barred flanks extending up to belly and becoming scalloped. Slightly paler on throat. Tail slightly more rufous than rest of body, also barred. Wings dark and heavily barred with small but obvious white spots in lesser coverts and mantle. Short pale brown supercilium contrasted with rest of head. Relatively short, thin dark bill. The bird gave a couple typical hard, short “jip” notes, with a Song Sparrow like quality. Noticeably different from the high-pitched Wilson’s Warbler like notes of Pacific Wren. Also a rapid burst of staccato notes, again lower than I expect for Pacific. Responded immediately to playback of Winter Wren with typical complex bubbly song, though slightly slower and shorter than Pacific Wren, with a clearer quality than Pacific, which often sounds very jumbled. After quieting down and going back to feeding along creek edge I played Pacific Wren with no response from the bird. Digi-bined photos and recordings of song. A comparison of the sonogram of this song to Pacific Wren is an fun practice for seeing the differences between the songs.
