Detalles de la observación
Very rare. First spotted at 14:00 when a Greater Roadrunner that I was watching actually lunged at this bird, flushing it, at which point it flew past me at close range. I was very surprised by the presence of this guy so far west of its typical winter range (sightings on eBird generally stop along the I-35 corridor, around San Antonio and Austin). During our relatively short observation period, we watched as it successfully pulled up 6 long earthworms from the shady areas in the middle of the campground loop, approx. here: 29.137158, -103.522793. Incredibly confiding. According to eBird, this appears to be the 3rd record for Big Bend NP (Nov-Dec 2011 at Cottonwood Campground and Dec 2013 at Panther Junction). Farther north/west, I see 10 records in eBird for New Mexico (1964, 1991, 1996, 1997, 2001, 2005, 2011, 2012, 2019, and one currently in Albuquerque [2020/2021]), 16 records in Colorado (https://cobrc.org/Reports/SpeciesDetail.aspx?id=157), 6 sightings in eBird for Wyoming, ZERO records for Arizona, and just two records for California according to the CBRC (https://www.californiabirds.org/cbrc_book/update.pdf).
