Medium-sized hummer with brown underparts, pale gray underparts, dark throat patch, pale malar stripe, short, black bill, and namesake violet patches on "ears," which it flared in impressive display. Pale tail feathers with broad, dark subterminal band and rufous tips also noted when tail was flared. Continued sighting at this hotspot
