Detalles de la observación
Late and a big surprise. Flew in and alighted on a lilac, preening itself on a branch only 20 or so feet away, for a couple minutes. Likely visiting a nearby coral honeysuckle, since neither me nor my immediate neighbors have any hummingbird feeders out. My first hummingbird in Maine for October. Initial overall impression was that I was looking at an Archilochus species, which I later confirmed after close observation of the narrow primaries via the photos. Details favoring Ruby-throated over Black-chinned include the P10 lacking a blunt, club shape; the inner primaries likewise lacking a broadness or bluntness; comparatively short bill; fairly whitish cheek without the sort of grayer smudging of Black-chinned; and more vibrant, multi-toned upperparts. The buffy edging to some of the feathers on the upperparts point to this bird being a young male.
