Now this was a huge surprise, literally and figuratively, as I'd not really considered that the Jabiru comes this far south... and what stately birds they were!! The male was keeping off on the other side of the lake, gracefully picking his way through the algae, as proud as a bird can be... to my astonishment, in that little side pond by the houses where the Snipe and Egrets were, a young Jabiru was standing in its bizarre monochrome best!! He was quite handsome actually, in an ungainly and scruffy sort of way... his running to takeoff was like a giraffe running, all ill-coordinated legs and desperation!
