Detalles de la observación
***mega; first record for Suffolk Co. and only the 6th for Massachusetts (followed closely by the 7th on Cape Cod); HY female by completely unmarked whitish throat; Identification as Black-chinned based on: 1) broad, club-shaped outer primary visible in stop-action photos and perched image; 2) face pattern, showing pale brownish lores with dark in front of the eye but no strong connecting dark line or wedge to the bill base; 3) proportionately long bill, probably outside the range of variation for Ruby-throated; 4) relatively dull greenish back, unlike the bright emerald green usually shown by Ruby-throated; 5) crow just dull and darkish with no hint of green (supportive, not diagnostic). A few typical Archilochus 'chup' notes were heard. Matt Garvey got video; SLR photos by MJI.
