Hardhead ducklings lead their mother on a merry chase!. The Hardhead or White-eyed Duck (Aythya australis)is the only true diving duck (or pochard) occurring in Australia. Hardheads dive deeply for their aquatic animal prey, a diet that is supplemented by waterweeds. Males have a prominent white eye and pale bill tip; females have a brown eye and have paler brown body feathers. Hardhead ducklings are very active, swimming frantically while feeding on tiny insects on the water surface. These ducklings led their mother, who just wanted to preen herself, on a merry chase along the margin of Rotary Park Lake in Rockingham, Western Australia. Elevation: 0 m. Date added to IBC: November 18, 2018.
