NPR/NGS RADIO EXPEDITIONS WILL STEGER & PETER BRESLOW APRIL 1997 ELY, MN LOG DAT 3 TWIN OMNIS 00:15-00:56 AMBI -walking outside through wet snow, a little dripping in bg 00:57-1:11 AMBI -walking, handling ice ... 1:12 -WS -this is like an old ice box. this is the ice that we -we brought this ice from the lake up in dec. the the lake has a little tanic acid in it and when it freezes the tanic acid freeze out giving you crystal clear ice .....we use the ice fro drinking water. i have some other ice in tanks with sawdust around it that will last until june .... 1:59-2:09 FX chipping away at ice WS -(talking about ice ... ) 2:27-3:24 FX -chipping away at ice, 3:24 WS-this tastes as good as glacial ice. it is a luxury to have water like this 3:32 PB -that wil tast better than the water from the well? WS -yeah. much better. this is very pure. and it is very similar to the barren lands in canada .....it is about the clearest water. you can't really buy water in a bottle that taste as good as this. and also to drink water that has ice in it is quite a luxury 4:16-6:20 AMBI -wind, faint dripping, a little talking in bg ... 6:21 FX -handling of ice, chipping ice 7:07 PB -so just your day to day living around here helps keep you in shape. VG WS -yeah. it is very physical. water, wood, (chipping), course(?) -you know i live on a ridge overlooking a lake so you know i always have to go up and down. that's the part that i like about living here. it is a very physical life. PAUSE (good ambi). you are closer to nature so to speak. you are always outside experiencing whatever the weather is like and this is a real very special day to me bc it is the first warm day we have had. spring weather definately on its way in. all the signs in WS -we are on the third floor here of the retreat ctr that i am building overlooking the boundery waters ..... land not flat ... (too windy) (again) PB -where are we? 12:46 WS -we are on the 3rd floor of this retreat ctr that i am building. we are indoors which is like a greenhouse, which is passive solar.... (describing how he built house, solar energy) ...the building is not completerd at this point, it is still open so you don't have a lot of heating ... 13:44 PB -what do you hope to have go on here? 13:50 WS -i have been working on this bldg for almost a decade now, but when i finish it 3 yrs from now i hope to have almost like a learning ctr, retreat type center for projects that mailnly have to do with education and environment. pretty much the work that i am doing right now. rather than going outside to wash, ny, i want to bring the individuals here to work more in an inspiring environment in the wilderness. so basically it is an educational facility. 14:26 PB -what is your biggest concern about the environment these days? 14:32 WS -Well, I am excepting it right now, but it is really the global change that we are responsible for bc of human activity. A biggest concern is the popUlation explosion, bc it is almost overwhelming. The solution of course is education, communication technology in that direction. But on the other sdie you have got a popUlation now that is exploded that popUlation that we talked about 20 -30 years ago. right now it is happening. soas a result, our resources are being used up, we are changing the atmosphere we are changing not only the atmosphere but the temperatures of...
