Chaetura swift high over Waneka Lake; it had earlier been right over the lake, foraging in a mixed-species flock of swallows.
Detalles de la observación
A small and dark swift, seen pretty well as it foraged above the surface of Waneka Lake; a bit paler on the throat, but that's a subjective field mark. The main thing to note is that I heard the bird. I wouldn't have called the notes those of a Chimney Swift. However, I have been out of practice with Vaux's Swifts for 17 years. The wimpy, scratchy call notes lacked the explosive quality of Chimney Swift. My guess is that this was a Vaux's Swift. The date is suggestive, of course. See also the photos below. Is there anything we can do with them? The broad-based wings and "primary bulge" (or, rather, the lack thereof) are assessable in these images, fwiw.
