9 birds, part of loose flock.
Detalles de la observación
We initially detected these birds whilst scanning for migratory hawks from the Beamer Hawkwatch tower, looking North over the floodplain of Lake Ontario. We spotted them through binoculars and followed them through scopes. Initially we saw a couple, then gradually more appeared, attracting our close attention. We observed the flock for a few minutes as it circled above the plain south of Lake Ontario and then over the Niagara escarpment east of the tower. Once they had gained sufficient altitude, the birds moved inland over the tower, passing approx 250m above us, heading South-South-West. Coloration, size and rapid wingbeat led the group to conclude these were Red-throated, rather than Common Loons. Numbers of RTLO were reported near Grimsby on Lake Ontario the same day, suggesting a significant movement of the sp. during the day.
