***continuing mega found last saturday by Mr Max Epstein of Brooklyn; second state record - both from Long Island. Nobody was on scene when we arrived but Liam quickly located its friend the grasshopper sparrow, then the Cassin’s sparrow, on the grassy edge of the loop road across from the restaurant. Once it was found, it was fantastically cooperative - other people arrived shortly after, and it was foraging less than six feet from seated photographers at times. At one point it attempted to fly across the road and very nearly ended up under a passing pickup truck (looked like a very close call to me). It also once it flew through the assembled group and perched in a bush almost directly over my head, vocalizing a few times. After we seawatched we came back to visit it again, and it flew across the road landing on the fence and once again, right at our feet. Wow, what an amazing experience - what’s better than a special sparrow??? Photos
