***very rare, hot damn - incredible find by Karen Becker earlier on in this wet day; species has a long history of vagrancy to the east coast (neighboring state of NJ has over two dozen records) but generally fleeting and unchaseable as a rule - classic heartbreaking there-and-gone kingbird, a trend this bird has already bucked for several hours. Not in view when I arrived (much anxiety) but while scanning the field a few minutes later, I saw a Tyrannus coming our way, skimming the tops of the grasses, with a pale gray mantle and a black cap - the one and only. It put on an incredible show thereafter, zipping around both sides of the driving range, perching on sprigs of vegetation, and prancing around in the air with eastern kingbirds occasionally stopping to hover like a swallowtail butterfly. At one point a grackle set upon it and chased it around for a while, but it resolvedly settled back into the same patch of vegetation and continued on doing kingbird stuff. Amazing. Life bird!!
