This photo gives you some idea re: what I saw. I was using a 500mm lens with a narrow AOV so could only capture so much. Water levels were low, so the birds were able to stand on the shore or even in the water. Some of them were also in the trees that ring the pond.

The birds were obviously staging and getting ready to head south. Interestingly, almost every one departed right before I left. Timing is everything. I'm so glad I showed up when I did.
