Initial photo that got me gull happy
Detalles de la observación
Initial description: Only gull on the lake so tricky to compare size. However, it appeared mid sized. Structure immediately stood out to me. Round headed, small beaked, very dove-like gestalt. Then I moved to the coloration. Its head and nape were draped in a smudgy brown that is significantly more extensive and diffuse than herring gull. Its eye appeared pale and deeply smudged. Next, I moved to the wing. Jet black primaries obviously favor thayeri over kumliens. The best is when it preened and spread its entire wing. A clear “Venetian blinds” pattern appeared, diagnostic for thayeri: long, black-edged primaries intruded the wings adjacent to long gray tongues. Bill and leg coloration variable and not super relevant for ID. Also marginally darker more Vega-like mantle. Eventually flew off so worth looking in the area (Stewart and compost). Edit: better photos appear to show Herring Gull. So sorry for the misreport, not used to these east coast AHGU or im just dumb LOL. Streaking not smudgy enough, eye too pale, bill too heavy, and primaries not pale below! HerringxIceland maybe still possible but who knows??? As far as gulls go "there’s no being good at them" - EM
