Detalles de la observación
Tentative ID until experts confirm. Photographed initially by Jane Mygatt on a Buena Vista Audubon walk earlier today. Female type. Off walking path from Paseo Lunada, Carlsbad, which is the place to park. Hummer perches on pepper tree on slope next to trail to left of orange-blooming cape honey suckle, where it feeds on nectar. Seemed chunkier than a BCHU on first impression Best lighting & views are when it perches in front of the dark pepper tree trunk. Bright iridescent green above, including crown, with color extending down into upper cheek area. White Dark above, light below; face pattern VERY contrasty, unlike that of BCHU. Very faint dot pattern in white throat area, most the time you cannot see. A darkish thin broken line at juncture of upper chest and throat. When hovering, does not flick tail as in BCHU esp when feeding. Primaries mostly straight and pointed, not curved and rounded as in BCHU. Tail black with outer three retrices with round, bright white tail spots, inner two retrices green. Breast and upper belly with very faint dusky mottling, with a pale rufous wash on the upper side of flanks and across the lower belly. The only vocalization I could catch was a couple of husky, burry tewp calls, or double note tik-tiks, somewhat like BCHU. Viewed with bins and through Guy McCaskie's scope. Drawing(s) to follow.
