MEGA!!! Heard about this bird through the grapevine via homeowner and after lengthy discussion we were granted access. In very typical dumbass fashion I misread Costa’s as Calliope as the former wasn’t on my radar whatsoever. Quickly and jaw droppingly disillusioned by that when, as the homeowner was showing us her garden, the world’s most obvious breeding plumage male flew up 5 feet from us and struck Carter and I speechless. Deep purple head, smallish size relative to Rufous and Anna’s. Homeowner very kindly allowed us to sit there and watch as the bird returned to the feeder every 5-10 minutes. At least 3-4 times after flying away from the feeder the bird perched somewhere unseen in the distance and sang! #223 for the Vancouver Island Big Year!
