Flock flew from S of the yard N into a big doug fir in Gary's yard at 37.0632359, -122.1205228 (different from yesterday). As they flew in I heard a single quiet song. The flock perched and a few fed for 5 minutes in that tree at 07:00 am then flew ENE out of sight. 5 individuals seen feeding on and off for parts of that 5 minutes, but several birds were alert at the tree tip the whole time. Apparently gleaning some small food item from last year's needle growth. See video. At 07:35 I heard the flock again and found them in a bare top of a doug fir all preening . After 8 minutes they started moving down to the lower branches of the doug fir, picking a bit at the foliage but not clearly feeding. It was clear that the flock was going down to something lower or on the ground that I could not see because the perched ones I was watching were looking down and they were all cycling back and forth from something below them. Maybe they were going to the big puddle or sandy area below that tree, this would line up with all the fluttering and preening they were doing just now too. This doug fir was S in the Odrins' yard at 37.0611343, -122.1196729. It had almost no cones (~60 countable) and buds swollen but not open. I got an exact count of the flock as they were perched in the bare tree, aligning with the count I made yesterday of the flock as it was in flight.
