Detalles de la observación
Extremely rare. From Spermaceti cove boardwalk at low tide with overcast skies. Darker and smaller than herring gulls, with deep pink legs, dark eye, greenish bill and pear shaped head. In the photos the eye placement seems high on the head. The open wing showed much dark in the primaries with white mid-primary tongue tips that connect to the broad white inner primary tips giving the "string of pearls" appearance. The underwing photos show dusky gray bases to the inner primaries and secondaries. Separated from herring by the dark mantle and eye. Eliminated herring x lesser black backed gull hybrid by dark eye and deep pink legs. Separated from Thayer's gull by darker mantle and much darker primaries. When /if this sub species gets split from herring gull, this will likely be the first state record for NJ.
