Detalles de la observación
Priscilla first spotted this woodpecker in the yard from our dining room and called out Downy Woodpecker. When I first got on it and viewed it from below I too first thought Downy. But it quickly turned its back to us which obviously wasn't a Downy back. I quickly realized that with the barred back and nearly pure white below with no spotting that this was a hybrid Downy x Nuttall's Woodpecker. In size and shape of the bird and its small bill it was more like a Downy Woodpecker. I think its face pattern may be something in between the two species. We couldn't see any indication of a white center to the back as in a Downy Woodpecker. There was no red on the head so we presume it's a female.
