One, then two COTE on the concrete pier just south of the Target parking lot in Edgewater, NJ (Bergen County). They were roosting with a mixed flock of mostly RBGU and HERG, but a few GBBG and a single GBHE were also present. Views were difficult at this distance (0.75 mile away), but digiscoped video of the first individual seems to show a partial black cap and white forehead while the bird is preening. This is why I concluded it was likely a non-breeding adult COTE rather than Forster's. When the bird is in flight, however, wing tips appear gray but not particularly dark, and a carpal bar could not be detected. There's no video of the second bird, but when they stood side by side their size, structure and plumage appeared to be similar. COTE are expected along the Hudson riverfront in late July, even though eBird flags them as rare in Bergen County. Most likely the early arrivals are birds dispersed from their nesting grounds in greater New York Harbor, since the first groups include adults and young. Their numbers dwindle by late August, and by September only one or two are present at this latitude of the Hudson. I began scoping the Edgewater riverfront intermittently this summer, either from Riverside Park or from the rooftop of my apartment building. The last time I documented COTE in Edgewater was on 14 September, but I don't check every day. The ones that nested on Governor's Island have departed already and the species is now flagged as rare for NY County on this date. The video is pretty poor quality but I'm hoping that it will assist with the ID.
