Detalles de la observación
Very scarce summer season visitor in Region 7 and within the Lake Champlain Basin in its entirety. Small handful of previous summer records are all from Bulwagga Bay. Only my second Essex Co. record of this species. Upon initial approach, I had assumed this would be one of the rare but regular Great Black-backed Gull x Herring Gull hybrids, but as I set up my scope I noted it was indeed an adult Lesser Black-backed Gull in breeding plumage. The bird was very skittish, and unlike the Ring-billed Gulls it did not stick around and took to flight almost immediately and headed south. Medium-sized sooty-backed gull, larger than the nearby Ring-billed Gulls and with bright yellow legs and feet. Head was clean white and the iris was pale yellow surrounded by a red orbital ring. Medium sized yellow bill with red gonydeal spot. Photos.
