Tiny partial eye ring at back of eye difficult to see with regular binocular power
Detalles de la observación
Adult male, adult female, and what Betsy Garrett and I determined was an intruding male. Female spotted and then nest to confirm nesting attempt. Intruding male explains why breeding male was so vocal when I arrived. After I quickly photographed nest, I immediately left the area. Because this is a mated pair, birders are asked not to use tape playback. If you stand on the pond bank of the south side of the west pond (ca. 1/2 down the pond), you will eventually hear and/or see the breeding male perch at the tops of the small line of trees closest to the south bank of the pond (far enough away from nest do not cause disturbance. Many photos of breeding male and a few of nest. Overall upper parts are brownish gray; partial eye ring at rear of eye and a very faint partial one in front of eye but light had to be perfect to see through camera-through 8x binoculars there appeared to be no discernible eye ring; crown mostly rounded except when calling in response to nearby intruding male- then slightly peaked at rear of crown; throat a dirty white, contrasting with darker breast, crown, and back; primary extension of moderate length; wing bars mostly a dirty white with hint of buff on upper edge; upper breast grayish; belly paler with slight yellowish tinge on flanks and undertail coverts; upper mandible mostly dark; lower mandible mostly yellowish orange, especially at the base.
