Detalles de la observación
*Changed to sooty grouse after seeing bird one week later. Initially heard a very low, rhythmic (5-6 notes) hooting coming from near the top of Eagle ridge at the northeast end of the park. It gave the call frequently for several minutes then became quiet. As I neared the source of the call, I was able to get a bad audio recording. At 2s and 25s the low hooting can be heard. Sounds very similar to https://macaulaylibrary.org/asset/157903381. As I climbed higher I flushed a very large, dark bird with a pale-ish tail tip from the ground which took off towards the north. Bigger than a ruffed grouse, but smaller and shorter-tailed than a turkey. Distinguished from sooty grouse based on vocalizations. The bird was seen in appropriate habitat (pines, hemlocks, some douglas-fir), but on the drier side. Not 100% on ID, and I am open to other suggestions.
