NOTES: NOTES ON DATA LOG: [recorded] 0840 - 1030 hr. Habitat: Subalpine Dry (mamane) Forest. The subjects were a banded pair of akis (AKIP) encountering another pair at the boundary between their territories. The birds recorded were G/O (adult male) singing and calling and R/R (adult female) giving whistle calls, swit calls, and tapping with the lower mandible. At times, a third bird, neighboring male B/W, can be heard counter singing with G/O. Sadly, these birds are now dead, and the entire "population" in this unique, isolated habitat numbers three aging males. Although the species survives in other habitats, this tape is impoartant for historical purposes. The tape records representative vocalizations from the species' repertoire at this site. Other birds heard in the backgound are Eurasian Skylark, Hawaii Amakihi, House Finch, and Red-billed Leiothrix. NOTES ON DATA LOG FOR THIS CUT: Break in recoding followed by inaudible woman's voice. Counter-singing w/ trill. Don't know which male this is. Good. [the next section's notes:] Break. Whistle call, song w/trill. Again, don't know which bird this is. No background birds until an HAAM later. Good. NOTES ON TAPE: "W/B with G/O." [notes on tape heard by mf.]. Other Behaviors: Counter Singing.
