Detalles de la observación
The habitat was dense, thick, low understory, a little over halfway from the trailhead to Lower Palisades Lake. I was walking back down the trail when I heard a strange, novel whining sound. Looked up to see what I thought at first was a hurt badger limping down the trail. When it lifted its head, I realized it was a grouse. As soon as this clicked, baby grouse began to flush out of the understory. I now realized the grouse was luring me away from its young. I didn't budge, and proceeded to take camera shots. The grouse did not like this. He turned, fanned his tail, activated his 'gills", and charged me. I held my ground, and amid my terror, managed to snap a couple photos. He slammed on the brakes less than 10 feet away, then proceeded to try luring me away again. This time I obliged. After 100-150 feet or so, he turned off the trail into the understory, making a gradual 180 I assume, back to his offspring.
