Large woodpecker with all black back and barred flanks, white stripe below eye. Could not see yellow crown to determine sex. Heard distinctive pik calls as well. Seen at coords below for a while and eventually flew north-northwest down the slope, calling while it did so. (45.563414,-122.069484). Foraging by flaking off bark from burnt/dead trees. Terrible lighting conditions because of the fog made getting decent pictures of a bird high on a tree very difficult, but audio recording is good. It might be a coincidence, but last year I observed two not far from this pin around the same time in the morning. Last week I attempted and arrived a little later than I wanted and did not hear or see it. It's curious to think that this area might be a regular area they forage in the mornings and how far away a nest might be (assuming breeding is happening). Last year my viewing window of 2 birds was around 9:10-9:35 and today I watched the one between 9:15-9:40 wherein the bird flew from the area both times. Just thought this might be helpful for anyone thinking of enduring the 5-6 mile roundtrip hike to look for them. :^)
