A female Yellow-bellied Sapsucker gives squealing cat-like meows between sups at her self-made saccharine buffet. This sound file is a composite of audio extracts, each separated by a second of silence, from three separate videos. The first recording (0:00-0:49) was taken at 1:04 p.m. with my Samsung S5. The second recording (0:50-1:36) and third recording (1:38-2:34) were both taken with my iPhone 6s, at 1:10 p.m. and 1:12 p.m., respectively. In each video, the sapsucker can be seen inching up a Scots Pine tree and then stopping at a block of holes, which she previously drilled and left to fill with sap. Having returned to enjoy the fruits of her labor, she can be seen bending and leaning over the holes to suck up the sap. The videos from my iPhone are digiscoped and show this action in marvelous detail. I uploaded some still images. Wind and handling noise abounds, unfortunately. I recall standing still when I took these recordings, though, so I suspect the wind is somehow responsible for the inexplicable loud popping sounds—a reminder that I need to invest in proper audio recording equipment! The low hum is the sound of the waves of Lake Erie. No background birds to note, surprisingly. The video from my Samsung S5 was recorded in .mp4 format, the iPhone 6s videos in .mov format. Using the program Ocenaudio, I extracted all the audio in .wav format and created copies of the sound files. Then I applied minimal edits: trimming the recordings, normalizing the volume of each separately to -3 dB, and then combining them into one sound file, as previously mentioned.
Detalles de la observación
Late to migrate, according to the Erie County Checklist of Birds. I found this adult female sucking sap from neatly arranged columns of drilled holes in a roughly 50' Scots Pine tree. I noted the red crown; white shoulder stripe; black-and-white barring on the back; black-and-white striped face, with a white stripe leading from the bill, curving along the side of the neck, and connecting to the breast; significant yellow wash over the back, nape, breast, and belly; and white throat, which indicates female sex. She was drilling holes on a second tree. Periodically, she would return to the Scots Pine tree, give some whiny cat-like mews as she approached her taps, and then drink the newly secreted sap. Afterwards, she shot back to the other tree to continue drilling holes. A joy to watch! I uploaded some still images from a digiscoped video I took of her drinking sap. I also uploaded audio of her calling.
