Red phalaropes at 12:24 PM
Detalles de la observación
Rafts and rafts of feeding birds approximately midway between the north shore of Rosa and Miguel, west of Talcott Shoal. Many more birds flying in from the south into the SB channel. Too many to count, but 2500 is certainly a low estimate. Estimated by hundreds. Only able to count birds off of port side of vessel as sun was to our starboard. It took us about 10 minutes to travel by the congregation of phalaropes, so the congregation was approximately 1 mile in diameter. A selection of photos is provided below to show the extent of the red phalaropes, not the actual number present. Some are a bit blurry (forgot to change camera settings), but all of the blurry white spots are phalaropes. Photos shown below were taken approximately 1 minute apart, except as noted, and our speed did not vary during the encounter. The photos do not adequately captues the shear numbers of these birds surrounding us.
