Detalles de la observación
First seen in direct comparison with Horned grebes. Viewed through a 20-60x Spotting Scope. Large darker grebes with larger bills. Bill held slightly down with back of head appearing peaked. Two of the birds I was able to see much yellow in bills. The third bird only had yellow near base. Necks were dark on back and fronts were light gray. Backs were all dark in color with some white occasionally showing above waterline in the waves. I viewed the Red-necked grebes for 40 minutes. While watching in the scope I was able to directly compare with Horned Grebes, numerous Red-breasted Mergansers, a Common Loon, and a Pacific Loon. They eventually flew and I was able to observe the extensive white secondaries and the head was held slightly lower than the body. Distance was too far for good photos but I attempted both sitting on water and flying. The first photo you can see some evidence of a peaked back of head and the other two photos the white secondaries.
