***Mega; epic find by Amy O'Neill this morning. Watched for over an hour as it worked its way from off the central portion of the cove east to off the beach not too far west of the parking lot and back (covering roughly 1 km one-way). Very active for much of this time, often providing only momentary views before diving. Started rather far out, beyond the last slick, but came in quite close as it moved down the beach (providing excellent scope views) before being startled by a swimming Gray Seal and retreating a bit farther out, not venturing as close again. Tiny alcid, not much larger than Dovekie. Bluish-gray above with distinctive head pattern (black hood with two-tone black and yellow bill and striking white neck that was frequently visible from shore). Seen in flight only once, when it was scared up by the aforementioned Gray Seal and flew farther out, frequently slapping against the surface of the water during flight and not able to get any lift presumably due to having gorged itself. Poor documentation photos obtained (the bird was paradoxically more active the closer it came). Thanks to Peter Trimble and Mike Tucker for staying on the bird long enough for me to arrive. Life bird.
