amazing experience and my first evidence of nesting here, though Mary McMahon shared a photo of babies from Facebook from last week. Flushed parent that flew off giving distraction display and then, with difficulty, noticed a camouflaged baby right underfoot. Took a few pics and then after scanning for others started to move off. Then four babies emerged and ran off in each of four cardinal directions with wings raised. A predator definitely would have struggled to know which to chase. As they ran off they gave high, descending whistled calls like a baby starling call and the mother came back around behind me, giving low grunts, and seemed to corral one of the young. Amazing that I spotted none of the other three babies! Such a cool experience: thankfully I was way off trail and these birds should be safe from walkers and dogs.
