Detalles de la observación
Attached: 3 Sound recordings (Clear signature on spectrogram of 5-7 notes of less than 500 Hertz frequency, although very faint to hear on playback) and 1 Photo (habitat and spot of a bird from phone camera). Unzoomed and Zoom of same photo. Started my hike with dread thinking I was hearing an injured cow or dog with a sad whimper. I recorded the sound. I then visually found the source of the sound -- a bird (lucky!) with 8x32 binoculars at quarter-mile distance perched and calling from rock on ridgeline south of trailhead. Visual identification on profile of the bill made it appear like a cuckoo. I knew this was a rare bird for this area. No cuckoos in area. Size made it a Greater Roadrunner. Later profile of entire bird confirmed roadrunner as large size with tail about as long as body. Tail stiff and straight. Long legs. There was a hint of sun through heavy clouds and bird has his back to sun, but the bird did not do the roadrunner sunbathing spread. Stood upright EXCEPT when cooing. Wind would sometimes fluff up its crest, otherwise crest was slightly prominent. Call (faint sound) of one Male Greater Roadrunner making a distinct co-coo-coo-coo-coo-coooooo in a series of 5-7 downward slurring notes. Heard bird from parking lot to cabin. It called about every 35 seconds. I observed it initiate the call by bowing its head and finishing the last cooooo with bill and head to chest. Pete Dunne writes "sounds like the whimpering cries of a heartbroken dog" in his Field Guide Companion. Perfect description for this bird this morning for at least 15 minutes in the hour past sunrise.
