A Nankeen Kestrel in a lighthouse niche – calling then flying off. Nankeen Kestrels (Falco cenchroides) are a very small falcon with a wide distribution throughout Australia and southern New Guinea. Nankeen Kestrels prefer lightly-wooded habitats, including low heath, and in areas without trees use cliffs and tall man-made structures like this lighthouse above Point Quobba north of Carnarvon in Western Australia to nest. This Kestrel was using a niche in the lighthouse wall for its roost, and was making its typical keening call on an very windy day before launching itself from the niche and flying off. Elevation: 10 m. Date added to IBC: September 10, 2019.
