A Welcome Swallow perching and preening in the wind. The Welcome Swallow (Hirundo neoxena) is Australia’s most common species of Swallow, and it has adapted well to human settlements, often building its cup-shaped mud nests under rafters and bridges. Welcome Swallows are agile fliers, catching small insects on the wing although they sometimes feed on the ground. This bird was perching on a jetty pile at Warrungup Spring Reserve on Harvey Estuary in south-western Australia. Elevation: 0 m. Date added to IBC: October 28, 2018.
