A Welcome Swallow perched, preening. The Welcome Swallow (Hirundo neoxena) is Australia’s most common species of Swallow, and it has adapted well to human settlements, often building its cup-shaped mud nests under rafters and bridges. Welcome Swallows are agile fliers, catching small insects on the wing although they sometimes feed on the ground. This Welcome Swallow was preening while perched on a dead tree in Herdsman Lake near Perth in Western Australia. Elevation: 7 m. Date added to IBC: September 11, 2018.
