A Little Egret hunting - stirring blue-green algal bloom-ridden water with its foot. Little Egrets (Egretta garzetta) are very active hunters. Instead of the usual stand-and-wait method used by most birds in the heron family Little Egrets adopt two active approaches – either dashing about with wings spread in pursuit of small fish or other animals, or walking purposefully in the shallows, pausing occasionally to stir the bottom with a foot in the hope of flushing its prey, as this one is doing. This Little Egret was hunting in the shallows at Lake Monger near Perth, stirring the blue-green algal bloom-ridden water with its foot and making lightning-fast darts with its beak when it spotted a potential food item. Elevation: 13 m. Date added to IBC: June 24, 2018.
