A Cape or Pintado Petrel swimming and feeding in the surf. The Cape or Pintado Petrel (Daption capense) is a striking black and white Petrel that is extremely common in the Southern Ocean and is often seen following ships. The name ‘Pintado’ comes from the Spanish for ‘painted’. A small group of Cape Petrels was swimming in the surf close to the shore on a windy day at Whalers Bay on Deception Island, occasionally dipping their beaks to feed, probably on small krill. Elevation: 29 m. Date added to IBC: February 7, 2019.
