A Snowy Sheathbill patrolling edge of a Southern Rockhopper Penguin creche. Snowy Sheathbills (Chionis albus) is the only land bird native to Antarctica. Small numbers of non-breeding Snowy Sheathbills occur in the Falkland Islands where it is commonly found at penguin and cormorant rookeries. Sheathbills are omnivores and scavengers and will eat almost anything including carrion, animal faeces, regurgitated fish and krill from other birds feeding their chicks and their eggs and chicks if the opportunity arises. This Sheathbill was patrolling the margin of a mixed rookery of Southern Rockhopper Penguins and Imperial Shags. Both adult and young Rockhoppers pecked at it as it walked by. Elevation: 12 m. Date added to IBC: February 7, 2019.
