A Southern Lapwing walking and calling. The elegant Southern Lapwing (Vanellus chilensis) is the only crested Lapwing species in South America, ranging from Central America to Tierra del Fuego. They are conspicuous, inhabitants of modified landscapes such as cropland, pastures and parklands, and also occur near wetlands and estuaries. They feed on insects and worms as well as small fish and aquatic invertebrates. Southern Lapwings are usually tolerant of people – this bird was about two metres from my camera – but they are ever vigilant for aerial predators, frequently glancing skyward to check for danger. Elevation: 214 m. Date added to IBC: February 20, 2019.
