A Crested Tern drives a Silver Gull away from its nest. Crested Terns (Thalasseus bergii) breed in several rookeries on Penguin Island, part of the Shoalwater Islands Marine Park 50 km south of Perth, Western Australia. Losses of chicks and eggs are high, particularly by predation from Silver Gulls (Chroicocephalus novaehollandiae). The adult Terns sit tight on their nests, calling as the Gulls hover overhead or stand nearby, waiting for an opportunity to grab an egg or a small chick. Silver Gulls also harass adult Terns returning with fish for their chicks, repeatedly chasing them and often preventing them from landing at their nest. Elevation: 11 m. Date added to IBC: November 20, 2018.
