NPR/NGS RADIO EXPEDITIONS HAWAII - BIRDS DAT #7 Alex Interview with Tonnie L. Casey, wildlife biologist, at Frisbee Meadows TC: I was part of the original expedition that came up in 1973.. . ..8 came up to do an ecosystems study, I was the ornithologist.. .the bird just happened to be a new one, so we all got to be familiar with it.. . . Got to know it a little better when did thesis on it.. . .in the studies knew pigs were a serious problem and destroyed habitat.. . Constructed fences to protect birds.. . . . .small mammalian problem too. This has been a forest preserve all this time - since 70s. Rats a problem too. Problem - when create trail systems you always increase the numbers of other animals that follow those trails.. . . Mongoose and rats here. Didn't know what we were doing, followed pig trails, didn't do rat trapping. After found the bird - late July. Up here two and a half months.. . . . new recording location: at 5:25 AC: Why has the situation changed? TC: 5:44 We found them in the early 70s.. . . ..in the 80s, pig population exploded.. . decimated the place, plus rat population continued to bloom.. ..more re. rats. Watched the po'ouli go through foliage - piloh tree, the next day went down to watch tree area again, and I watched rat follow trail.. . ..to tree. Realized what a menace they were. Po'ouli don't fly high, are vulnerable to rats. AC: You've become a controversial person here... destroy rats TC: more re. rats.. . ..control etc. AC: Describe the Po'ouli TC: 12:26 It's a little brown bird very much like an English sparrow. It's brown, has a black mask, looks secretive, little glints of an eye, has a little black beak like a sparrows beak, white chin bib, cinnamon colored under body towards back end which are sort of buffy, wings are cinnamon, tail exceedingly short. Very drab. Scientific name means black faced. Brown bodied.. . .very drab little bird.. . .didn't look like a Hawaiian honeycreeper. AC: What like when realized found something new? TC: Professor didn't know what it was.. . ..another person said had to collect specimen.. . ..collected two immature males.. . . . AC: Changed life after found bird TC: Yes,. . . ... changed my life.. . . . . AC: What's it like to spend a day like this? TC: Very steep - 55 % slope.. . ..It's rough. This is an unusual day. Rains in excess of 400 inches per year. Phenomenal not to have mud. Very hard to find the birds in the rain. They usually find you.. . .when you get to know them, they always checked in. Used to go down and find a pair in about 40 minutes. Were a pair in this gulch and this gulch.. . . . so I would really like to see this place restored because this was their prime habitat. Restored = rats removed and understory come back. If remove rats, would help seed sources.. . ..and the insect pollinators. The rat is a member of the ecosystem that doesn't belong at all. if its is removed, will get insects, birds, and plants, and snails.. . ..get the rats out. [18:39 = End] Ambience behind the previous interview: 19:04 - 2 1130 - Very windy sounding - almost like at the beach! FX: 21:48 - 22:40 Po'ouli bird - only recording on cassette player FX: 28:12 - 29:57 Helicopter arrives at Frisbee Meadows (Interview with Jim Darling on Humpback Whales 30: 18).
