NPR/NGS RADIO EXPEDITIONS YELLOWSTONE -DAT #2 03:13 -05:19 Dan Rinehart [DR] We're going to the east shore of the lake ... going to a stream, Cub Creek, This is a collaborative study with Yellowstone National Park and the Interagency Grizzly Bear Study Team. This is roger -and Travis, main technicians who will be studying the abundance of cutthroat trout spawners on this stream and associated bear use. We will looking at tracks, bear scat, lots offish parts .... not sure if see a bear, but will see evidence of bear use on this stream. We'll follow them as they go up the stream ....... What we're doing is determining the abundance of cutthroat trout spawners on these streams, so just counting fish. Have these little fishermen glasses that help us as we walk upstream. Develop indices of bear use. Use indirect sign ... look at number of scat, fish parts, degree of trailing and measure tracks, tell us number of bears, what kind of bears, tell us how bears are using this stream. Also, collect DNA samples, have a little barbed wire hair corral with a jug [blood] of scent in the middle of that, and bears will go to that, get bear hair caught, determine how many bears use these streams. 08:00 -09:00 Ambi -boat moving through water -then boat engine rev and take off 13:50 -14:20 Ambi -boat slow down and landing across the lake onto sandy beach 16:40 -16:58 * * Ambi -Unloading and getting off boat onto sand 16:59 -17:14 * * Ambi -walking on sand 17:55-18:04 **Ambi Walking in water to sand 18:37 Ambi -Radio re. illegal campers [NG] AC; note re. half moon hanging over the lake -in the morning 20:23 -What are you doing with that jug of stuff.
