Successfully hunting insects- seen eating a dark cricket. Walking in a low spot at times laying on the ground nearly disappearing from view. Relatively close to the road, at times during car commotions it looked skittish and aware of our presence but never flushed. Right time of the year, wing molt, South winds for the past week, a recent report (two weeks prior) of a flyby southbound Crested Caracara reported from near Yamaska, Montérégie, Quebec. While exceedingly rare in the East, there are patterns of regular (but rare) occurrences in the West where they are accepted records of vagrancy. I find it extremely curious that a northbound Crested Caracara seen at Sandy Hook in May of 2007 showed up in MA later the same month...
