NOTES: Tape notes: "False Killer Whale herd. BQR-3a filters out mostly. Found herd est. 100 miles S of Frying Pan Shoals. Last part of tape, whales were 10 feet around bow of ship - gooq squeals, some pictures (Bill has some close-ups). One rode bow for 10 seconds, later 1 more rode bow for short period. Several jumped clear of water. Appeared to be spread out over 2 miles, in small pods. Only one group seemed to be making all the sounds, the same group that came in to check us over." Deck Wildlife Watch: "Date: 10 Apr. 1968. Vessel: R/V Trident. Cruise: #48. Weather: Cloudy, partly, squalls later. Wind: NW 6, changes to 15-25 gusty. Sea State: 1 1/2 to 3 1/2. Visibility: 5 miles, haze to 3. 0905 - Herd of marine mammals - est 500 yds off starboard quarter. Some leaping out of water, Flase Killer Whales! 0915 - These are Pseudorca - bulbous snout, narrower + sharper dorsal fin than pilot whales, and dive loonger than pilot whales. Stopped to lissten and about 6 came right in under the bow, Saw several individuals jump clear of the water and several shoot straight up for about 2/3 of their body length. Started up again about 1000 and one came in and rode the bow wave for about 1-2 min. Seems to be a large herd made up of numerous small pods (family groups?) of 5-6 animals. Dark gray to black in color. 1000 - still with us." SEAOCEAN. Other Behaviors: Clicks, Whistles.
