Detalles de la observación
Based on a tip from Kristin Pennock, I searched this area for Eastern Whip-poor-will at dusk. I first heard a singing bird at a distance. It sang a few times and then was silent. I moved around trying to get close enough for a recording, but the bird was only singing sporadically. Just before I started the recording, I heard the call note that is at the start of the recording, I then saw a dark shape of a bird land in the gravel road, about 25 feet from where I was standing. It made a few more calls, I started the recorder, then it sang. A second bird flew in, the birds made contact with each other, and then moved apart. One of the birds made the third vocalization on the recording several times. Then one bird flew directly toward me and turned away in front of my face. After that I didn't see either bird again and I left the area shortly afterward. I assume that I observed courtship behavior and am coding it as C. According to Kristin, a singing Whip-poor-will has been at this location for several weeks now, so it could also be coded as S7.
