Mallard (Domestic type), Cayuga-type
Beobachtungsdetails
There was a nice assortment of Domestic Mallards today. Two Cayuga-type domestic ducks were here. Cayugas look black until they turn just right in the sun, when dark green highlights appear. One of the domestic ducks appears to be of Indian Runner Duck stock, a pied variety. /// Quoting Ashton's "Keeping Ducks and Geese", the history of the Indian Runner Duck is as follows: "Shortly after they were imported into Britain in 1835 by the 13th Earl of Derby, these ducks were given the name 'Penguin Duck' because of their upright stance. They laid lots of eggs, they didn't fly, and in their native islands of Indonesia they were allowed to wander around the fields picking up invertebrates and waste grain. Salted, the carcasses and the eggs were exported on sailing ships. These birds played an important role in the duck economy of South-East Asia and still do." /// As for Cayugas, Ashton says, "The Cayuga's plumage is what makes it spectacular. The pigment that covers the feathers makes them black, but structural qualities of the feathers themselves intercept and scatter the light to give a brilliant green lustre".
